Britney Spears vs. Keri Hilson

Wow. My friend that I frequently go tit for tat with in regards to music and artists just got on me because I admitted that I like Britney Spears’ new song/video “Circus” but, I dislike Keri Hilson.

(I’m sorry but, at this time I guess Brit’s record company has disabled embedding but, for those who haven’t seen the video yet as soon as I find one that can be embedded I’ll replace this one)

He said  , “Let me get this straight you like crazy driving wit her baby in her lap and no seatbelt…never wearing underwear Britney but not this chick who has written for Diddy, Usher, Ciara, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Omarion, The Pussycat Dolls, & Britney Spears?”

My reply was something to the effect of I don’t really care about Britney’s mental state because it has nothing to do with the music that she produces. Then once I thought about that statement I tried to rephrase it because a person’s mental state probably will affect what they produce. What I meant was I like Britney’s music regardless of what goes on in her personal life. I don’t judge a person’s art or music based on what goes on in their life. It just either appeals to me or it doesn’t.

Now back to this Keri Hilson chick. I was going to blog about her a while back but, I decided not to because I’m not really into “hating” or I’d probably be looked at as simply a hater. This is just my opinion but, I think Keri is just another cute face. I mean so many artists have given her props and backed her but, every one of her songs that I have heard aren’t special at all. I actually don’t have one that I can say I actually like besides “Turnin me On”. I only like that when it’s played it in the club. I guess because it’ll make you dance a little bit but, it’s nothing special at all. I remember when I first heard it a long time ago over at Necole Bitchie’s and I was thinking, “is this is all she can to bring to the table”. At that time I don’t think the track was mastered yet and Wayne wasn’t on it. I can’t speak on Keri’s writing skills because I have yet to find out exactly which songs she’s written for people. So my opinion is solely based on her singing efforts. Before I truly look like a hater I will admit this…. I saw her “Turning me on” video for the first time yesterday and I must say I was a little turned on myself. She was looking extra good in that hat and somewhat baggy jeans . And in that wifebeater too LMAO

Also, I know a lot of folk has written Britney off altogether because of her past breakdown but, we can’t forget her pre- the breakdown. Around 03 I had her album, “In the Zone” and it was hot. You’d hear that album pumpin’ from my dorm room on many occasions. So just like some had written off Mariah when she had her breakdown, same with Whitney let’s not forget what these artist have done pre- and post their breakdowns. They are still very HUMAN.

Oddly enough, I’m inclined to agree with you about this, because the only song I like from Keri Hilson is “Energy” (and I never thought I’d admit saying that I like Britney Spears.lol). Everytime I hear Keri I have to wonder if her voice is auto-tuned, and even if it isn’t, she doesn’t give good voice most of the time.

I think people have forgotten that at one point there was a difference between singers/songwriters/musicians/etc. So now, if you like songs someone wrote, you have to automatically like them as an artist (ie: Ne-yo), which is not the case. I don’t know which songs Keri Hilson has written, nor for whom, but while I might like those songs (and she may be a great songwriter), as a singer she underwhelms.

Now as far as Britney. . . I can’t support a performer who I know lives kinda shady, because I feel like I’m putting money in their pocket. Like, as much as I might like songs from R. Kelly’s “Chocolate Factory” I’ll never buy the album because I do honestly believe he has a problem with young girls (and a history. . .remember Aaaliyah), and I don’t want to feel like I’m supporting him in any form or fashion. Britney was clearly on drugs at one point, so I really wasn’t interested in buying her albums. Not to mention, I can watch a few of Britney’s videos, and bump one or two of her songs, but honestly none of her stuff impresses me enough to buy her albums.

This is why we get along so well. When someone says something to us about our opinions, we take to our blogs.

    PS – Britney is a train-wreck-coked-out-crack-head, but I <3 her

WOW! I never thought I would be so interested in talking about Britney Spears, LOL. I have to say, Britney is one of my guilty pleasures. I enjoy a number of her songs in terms of lyrics and themes. Her delivery at times is questionable, but when I am dancing to her songs I don’t think of that so much. Keri is talented and I like her song “Energy,” but comparing the two is like comparing a cherry to a cherry blossom. They both are cute and have important functions, but no one eats cherry blossoms. We wait until they become cherries to fully enjoy them.

it is clear that Britney has issues, but to write her off because of that would be out of order. If we did that to everyone who had issues, people like George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Donny Hathaway, Phylis Hyman, and most of the industry would be considered throwaway people. They are people just like us. You and I have issues, too. Others just don’t blog about us.

The difference between Britney and Keri is that Britney has proven herself and is considered an icon. Go and look through blog of days past and find that people had the exact same comments about Britney when she first came out.

I think something cam be learned from every artist. It pleases me that we can even discuss this. I am hard on a lot of artists like LIL’ Wayne, Souljah Boy, T Pain, and so many others, and wouldn’t give them the time of day, but there are differences and they all serve a purpose, just not one I am willing to wait on.

Ok. I thought it was just me who wasn’t on the Keri Hilson bandwagon. “Turning Me Off” is kinda hot. BUT I think between Bey and Rihanna, they kinda have the Pop/R&B chick game on lock. Not that there’s not room for everyone. She just has yet to differentiate herself from everyone else in my eyes.

Britney? That bitch is bad. Period. And I guess I come at my view of her from the perspective of a person who has survived mental illness. Coming back from that is no small feat and so Brit gets props from me all day.

    Glennisha,

I wouldn’t call myself a Keri Hilson fan. I have featured photos of her on my blog, not becasue of her singing but becasue she’s hot. lol I’m really not even that familier with her music. I saw a Usher music video she appeared in and I’ve seen the Energy video and that’s about it.

Keri sort of reminds me of Mya. Everyone says Mya is reallybeautiful and talented, which she is but she just can’t seem to move beyond being on the outer fringes of success. It seems that Keri’s career might be heading in that direction.

As far a Brit goes I’m not really a fan mostly becasue like Beyonce she is over-exposed in the media. I got sick of hearing about her last year. It seemed like every other day there was Brit drama.

Didnt Keri Hilson write Britney’s Circus song?

More and Again- Really? When energy came out it didn’t move me at all. That song still hasn’t grown on me. I was actually disappointed that was her first single. Girl you hit it right on the nose. I don’t know what songs she’s written either but, her singing is mediocre. There is absolutely nothing that stands out about her to me. She seems just like another Cassie or Christina Millian. Wow. I understand where you’re coming from but, I’m not like that. People are still human. Now in R. Kelly’s case I have to agree. I probably would burn some of his new stuff but, I wouldn’t buy it. I must say though he aint been the same since the Chocolate Factory anyway. I was pissed that I bought that last cd. He needs to just retire.

Lucy- True lol. I don’t know why but, I just feel so compelled to. It’s like I have to double check and make sure I’m not crazy or the only person that feels that way.

Billione- You’ve reappeared! ;-) She’s one of my guilty pleasures too. Yea her delivery is questionable but, she does enough for me. Oh boy did you make a good point. Some of the greatest have had MAJOR break downs. Again, we have to remember that these folks may have fame and money but, they are still HUMAN. They’re not robots or machines. You’re damn right too. Britney is an Icon. Only people who get talked about so badly, get soooo dogged out and still come back like nothing happened are Icons…again, can somebody say Mariah Carey. I think we all forgot about her mishap.

Robin- Girl me too. Absolutely, Bey and Ri Ri have it on lock! See she isn’t doing anything different at all. There are already enough cute faces in the game. Hell yea Britney is bad. It’s almost as if her breakdown never happened. At first she as all over the blogs and news. The paps were on her like white on rice and then all of a sudden. BOOM BOOM BANG! She arrives with womanizer then circus. and it’s like Britney did what? huh?

Monie- You and I are on the same page. She’s hot and that’s about it. Sadly, I agree about my girl Mya. She is very talented as far as dancing, doing musicals, and stuff like that. She’s very beautiful but, nobody can get past her looks. Yea the media was on Britney so ridiculous. I actually got tired of them messing with her. If the media was on me like they were on her I’d probably go bald too.

    Bella- LOL

Commish- Ummm I’m not sure. My friend told me that Keri actually did some writing for her but, Idk exactly what song. Anywho, Welcome. Haven’t seen you here before. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

EVERYONE- I swear I love all you guys. Love your different opinions! *group hug* LOL

Just wanted to clarify. . . . nothing that I said was meant to come off as judgemental. I have family members who have been drug users, and I’ve watched it tear my family up. I can’t consciously support someone who I know uses drugs. Yes, there are plenty of artists who do (it’s the entertainment industry, come on), I don’t speculate. But, certain things I don’t feel right supporting.

    And, I have to add. . . .

I’m surprised that Keri made it this far as a singer (she should thank her lucky Timberland). And, I’ll admit. . . maybe I’m biased towards “Energy” because I like the video.lol.
